GenCon 2010

Who’s Ready For GENCON????

I know I am! Looks like we’re going to have a pretty full schedule at this year’s GenCon. While we had a little hiccup in establishing an accurate schedule in the GenCon system, everything should be correct now and we’re ready to walk you through a list of what you can come out and play with us.

BATTLE ROYALES

A staple of WizKids events for years, this quick play event continues. As soon as 8 people are signed up, the event is ready to go. Eight folks are split into two groups of 4 people. Each person opens their Hammer of Thor or The Brave and the Bold booster, picks a piece and passes the rest. Each player teams up with the person next to them and battles it out against the opposing team. The first round ends as soon as one player has lost all of their figures. The winning teams face off, but no healing takes place between rounds. In round 2, once a player has been eliminated, the remaining 3 players face off head to head. Last player standing is then declared the winner!

SCHEDULE/COST

Battle Royale events are planned to run every day from the time we open with the last one starting no later than 2 hours before we finish our day, with table availability possibly forcing us to adjust our plans for how many we run simultaneously. The cost of a Battle Royale is $14.00. You can preregister through GenCon or bring an appropriate amount of tickets.

KING OF THE HILL

This was a very successful event at last year’s GenCon and we’ve upped it a notch this year. First, each universe has 2 hills. Secondly, we’ll be running these events for 3 days – Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Players start the event with 2 boosters and play a 300 point match against their opponent. Whoever wins gets 2 new boosters and faces off against the next challenger. If you’re good enough, you can be playing all day!

Last year, we played through Sunday and had our top 2 players face off. This year, we’re doing something a little different. The top 2 players from each universe (4 total) will qualify to participate in a special event on Sunday. The King of the Hill finals will be a 2 booster sealed event as a complete round robin. Among the prizes the winner gets, they earn the right to choose a non-generic keyword and work with WK to design an Alternate Team Ability for it (subject to licensor and game design approval).

SCHEDULE/COST

Thursday through Saturday, King of the Hill also starts from the time we open with the last one starting no later than 2 hours before we finish our day. The cost of this event is $26.00. You can preregister through GenCon or bring an appropriate amount of tickets.

The King of the Hill Finals will be seated on Sunday, starting at 11:00 AM. We will call off the names of qualifying players (2 from DC hills and 2 from Marvel hills). If you are present and have a GenCon ticket ($2.00) to play when your name is called, you will be in the final 4!

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

The meat and potatoes. The big event. The whole enchilada! If you want to prove yourself to be the best, this is the event you are coming to play. The World Championship is a 3 day extravaganza and is designed to showcase a player competing in every format.

Day 1 will have a 2-booster sealed game with product from The Brave and the Bold. With a 300 point team, you’ll be playing for at least 4 rounds. Folks who are undefeated qualify for the finals event.

Day 2 features a Modern Age Floor format – 300 point build using The Brave and the Bold for at least 150 points. Again, this event will have at least 4 rounds and again, folks who go undefeated make it into the finals event.

If you didn’t have a perfect record in Day 1 & 2, there is no need to despair. While up to 8 seats may go to undefeated players, we will still have at least 8 seats available for folks with the best record out of Day 1 and Day 2. Come Sunday morning, we will “call roll”. The top seats will be given to the undefeated players from days 1 and 2 (in order of their points per game average). After that, we start calling for folks who had the most number of wins over the course of the 2 days (breaking ties by their total number of victory points). When we have 16 players, we are ready for the 300 point Modern Age constructed event. This event will be 5 rounds. The first 2 rounds will be run swiss style followed by the top 8 going into a single elimination ladder.

Whoever wins this event will be crowned the World Champ 2010. Among the prizes we have for you to walk away with, you will also be entitled to work with WizKids and design the character of your choice in an upcoming set. Don’t know if that’s cool? Ask Ben Cheung, the winner for 2008 how he feels about this Nightcrawler figure?

OK, so maybe you come to GenCon for a level of play somewhere between “quick play” and “World Championship”. We’ve got events for you too!

Web of Spider-Man Release Event

Come and play with HeroClix figures that are brand-spanking new! Excitement will be high for this set. Prior to today, you’ll get some previews, some speculation, everything EXCEPT the cool plastic figures to hold in your hand! This event will be a sealed event with all undefeated folks walking away with a cool prize.

Web of Spider-Man Team-Up Event

Didn’t get enough of Web of Spider-Man the day before? Grab a friend and come play in this Team-Up event. The rules for playing team-up are very similar to our last Team-Up event, played at Wizard World Texas 2008. An article will be posted between now and then with a full set of instructions. But each partner will open 2 boosters and together you will create what (you hope) is an unstoppable force. Seating is very limited for this event, so be sure to preregister.

Schedule: Friday, 12:00 PM – We will start taking registration information for this event up to an hour before posted time. Players pre-registered with GenCon will be able to sign in and provide their ticket ($28.00). Preregistered players will have until noon, at which point we will take registrations from other folks, up to our 64 person cap. Players should register together as a team! After that, we will distribute 2 Web of Spider-Man boosters to each player that is registered and get this event underway!

Golden Age Constructed

Dig into the back of your collection and build a 300 point team. A figure from 5 years ago? Yes! A feat from the first set with feats (Mutant Mayhem)? You betcha! Bring a set of Battlefield Conditions? If that’s what you want! Okay, event dials are not being used in this event, but your choices are still through the roof! This 32 person event will let you play HeroClix like you do at home – with everything you’ve got!

Schedule: Thursday, 1:00 PM – Players should arrive to this event with their Force Build sheet filled out and ready to go (we will have a PDF available for download closer to the event and sheets available at the con). Preregistered players will be able to sign in as much as one hour prior to the event. Please have your $2.00 GenCon ticket with you to play.

Watchmen Constructed

From “everything in your collection” to the “newest of the new”! The Watchmen Constructed event allows you to bring a 300 point team built exclusively from Watchmen figures. As a special rule for this event, all figures are treated as Uniques, so anyone with one Watchmen set is equally ready to play. Folks will need to bring a $2.00 GenCon ticket with them to play OR a receipt from the WizKids Booth for a set of Watchmen (in which case, WizKids will provide your GenCon ticket).

Schedule: Thursday, 1:00 PM – Players should arrive to this event with their Force Build sheet filled out and ready to go (we will have a PDF available for download closer to the event and sheets available at the con). Preregistered players will be able to sign in as much as one hour prior to the event. Please have your $2.00 GenCon ticket with you (or a receipt from the WizKids booth for a set of Watchmen) to play.

GENCON TICKETS

Please notice that all events require at least a $2.00 GenCon ticket to play. This is not unusual. What is unusual is that we will not have a cash box at GenCon at all this year. All events must be paid for using GenCon tickets. This is a good reason to preregister for the events – to make sure you have just what you need for registration.

SUPPLIES

As usual, we will provide maps and dice for players to use. When battling, the player going first will have the option to use the map provided or a map from their own collection. So if your team’s strategy is benefited by one map over another, make sure you bring your copy of the map with you. To this end, it’s worth noting that there is very likely going to be table space concerns. If that happens, players may be restricted to only using 2’x3’ maps.

SO……

What are YOU waiting for? Head on over to GenConReg.com and sign up for these awesome and fun events!
